1982/4
Ben worked for the
British Antarctic Survey
on the island of South Georgia.
This 18-month contract was spent studying albatrosses and other seabirds.
The two summer seasons were also filled with routine survey work of the major animal
populations on Bird Island, a biological research site just off the northern tip of the
mainland of South Georgia. It was during this tour that Ben decided to switch careers,
from scientific research to freelance photography.

1985/6
For nine months Ben sailed aboard the yacht Damien 11 with Jerome and Sally
Poncet and their family, visiting South Georgia (to survey elephant seal and seabird
populations) and the Antarctic Peninsula (well, why not).

1988/9 Once again, Ben joined the yacht
Damien 11, this time working for National Geographic
magazine on a three month contract to shoot stills for a major feature on
Antarctica (published in April 1990). Several other photographers were contracted for this
project and over 200 photographers submitted images from stock. Bens work featured
well in the article with a three-page pull-out, a double spread and several
smaller images.

1992
Two 3-month filming expeditions, one at each end of the year, for "Life
in the Freezer".
On these trips, Ben shot production, location and wildlife stills as well
as providing field support for camera crews in remote field camps. These were wonderful
journeys where the emphasis was to visit the most spectacular locations at the most
spectacular times of year and to spend as much time in the field as possible. A wildlife
photographers dream !
